Miss Doe's Steel Magnolias Moment

I really did not have any expectations in regards to our rehearsal lunch. We had picked what we thought was a pretty good restaurant and all of the plans were in place. However, this was definitely not an area of the wedding that I had put much detail into.

We set out bright and early on a Friday morning with our bridal party in tow. We would be traveling about an hour so we would be staying up there for the whole weekend. As we hit the road, the best man checked with us to make sure we had all of the tuxes.

Tuxes? Whoops. Yeah, we forgot the tuxes.

Thank goodness for his reminder! Luckily we were not far so we quickly turned around to grab them. This got me worried though, what else would go wrong? This wasn't exactly a good way start to the weekend. Luckily everything was smooth sailing from there on out.

We ended up holding a semi-casual lunch at the Auburn Ale House that followed our rehearsal. They truly did an outstanding job with not only the food but with the entire luncheon. They even did a personalized menu which was really a nice touch.

{You can't see it but our names were on the top of the menu}

The food was superb, the manager and waiters were beyond accommodating and our overall experience here was fantastic. They didn't miss a beat making sure everyone had a mimosa in hand and a smile on their face.

I have to say though, one of my favorite parts of the day was my Steel Magnolias moment. You guys, let me say this again.

I HAD MY STEEL MAGNOLIAS MOMENT!

Seriously, it was beyond awesome in every single which way. I had ordered Mr. Buck's grooms cake from Olivia's Custom Cakes out of Roseville, CA. I never was able to meet her but I went with my gut on this one. She was one of the few bakers I could find that would be able to sculpt a duck cake with red velvet cake and not charge me my first born child.

She beyond delivered, just check out this masterpiece:

The funniest moment of the whole day was when it was time to cut the cake. Mr. Buck asked me how we should cut it and I said, "I don't know, why don't you take a bit out of the head. That would be awesome." So he did, and little did I know that the head was made out of Styrofoam.

Umm, whoops. Everyone thought I was playing a practical joke on him but I honestly had no idea that the head was made out of Styrofoam. We all had a good laugh and it was time to move on to actually cutting the cake, a la Steel Magnolias.

{Yuuuuuum}

It was then time to give our bridal party their gifts. I decided to wrap everything in brown Kraft paper and fill the front with photos from when all of us were young. Each person knew which gift was theirs simply by looking at the photos.

{The contents of the bridesmaids gifts will be revealed in my recaps!}

Even though I had not obsessed over the rehearsal lunch, it turned out to be quite an enjoyable, fun and beautiful afternoon. Sometimes things like that seem to just work out the way they are suppose to.

Honeymoon in Tulum: Part Tres

The final installment of my honeymoon series is all about the Mayan ruins. If you ever find yourself in or near Tulum, you must visit the ruins. It is just wrong if you don't.

I was a little skeptical at first thinking this outing would be boring. I honestly did not know much about the Mayans and wasn't entirely sure what to expect. However, this turned out to be one my favorite parts of the week.

There are a few different ruins that you can visit. In particular Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza. We chose to visit Tulum because it is set back on cliffs overlooking the ocean and it is much closer than the other ruins. However, Coba is the only one you can actually climb and is set back into the jungle, and Chichen Itza is just magnificently huge. I do plan to visit the two others if I am ever back in that area.

For now though, Tulum was a great introduction to the Mayan ruins. Many people decide to use a tour guide, but we chose to just walk around and read the little informational signs. That was sufficient enough for us and I actually quite enjoyed that.

Might I suggest wearing tennis shoes. They are not quite as fabulously comfortable as flip flops, but you will thank me. I had actually planned on wearing flip flops until Mr. Buck insisted that I wear tennis shoes. I complained and said I am going to look funny with my shorts on...but he said that you are just asking to stub your toe or get a blister. I complied and I am so thankful that I did. There were so many people wearing flip flops who looked to be in a little pain. I proudly marched on by in my Nike's. Functionality won yet again.

If nothing else, the Tulum ruins have quite the photo backdrop.

There are many ruins across the world, have you ever visited any? What did you think of them?

Honeymoon in Tulum: Part Dos

We were on a mission in Mexico.

A mission to find good Mexican food.

We failed.

Luckily for us, we live in an area of California that has some of the best Mexican food around. We really do not need to travel far for delicious Mexican cuisine. Seriously, even our Taco Bell is better than other states. That is a fact.

However, we did find delicious Italian, Thai and Argentinian food. Weird, I know.

We found that this part of Mexico really caters to Europeans and other such cultures. Many come to Tulum to open their own restaurant. It is a very unique area of Mexico, unlike anything we had yet to experience.

We decided to let our stomachs and Trip Advisor decide where we should eat. The number one restaurant listed is an Italian spot called Posada Margherita. The menu is small, but the flavor is huge. This was some of the best pasta we had ever tasted.

Next up was was a beautiful little Thai restaurant called Mezzanine. Here at home we have a few Thai restaurants, and it is some of our favorite type of food to eat. Mrs. Lemon had recommended this place to me when I had met her and Mrs. Hawk for dinner a few months ago. I am so glad we decided to stop in and have lunch here because not only was the food delicious, but the view was to die for. The food was among some of the most beautifully displayed that we had all trip. Too bad it was beyond delicious and we both ate ours too fast to snap a photo. We both highly recommend the drunken noodles. As Rachael Ray would say...YUMMO!

One of the most anticipated meals of the week was our reservation at a fancy little restaurant called Hechizo. They were originally closed for the season but decided to open it one time while we were there. They pride themselves on being an upscale and unique restaurant of Tulum. It is at the very end of the strip in Tulum, and is quite hard to find. You definitely have to know where you are going to find the place. It is hidden in the jungle and the path is lit up by candle lit conch shells. Once you make it to the restaurant, you will find it sitting ocean front. It is absolutely breathtaking.

I have to say, my food was excellent. Mr. Buck's was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular. I would recommend starting dinner with the truffle fettuccine appetizer and having the cod for dinner. The meal concludes with a warm flourless chocolate dessert. This was by far the best dessert we had the entire trip.

There really is not much a menu, the chef comes out and tells you what he is making for dinner. It is all a very interesting and different type of dining experience. If you have the opportunity, I would definitely try this place. Just try the cod over the snapper ;)

I was also fairly convinced that Johnn Depp, Anna Kournikova and Shaun White were there. Mr. Buck shoots that one down pretty quickly, but I say it was them. Or atleast I am going to pretend it was them.

Our last restaurant we ate at for dinner was a place we stopped at on a whim. Unfortunately I don't have any photos because I really had not planned on eating here. Let me tell you though, this was not only some of the best food we had in Tulum...it is some of the best food we have ever had. Hands down.

It is a little Argentinian place on the strip called Casa Banana. The decor inside is straight up gorgeous yet eclectic. The wait staff is beyond excellent, which is huge in my book. At one point our waiter saw there was a mosquito in my wine. He dumped it out and poured me a new glass. I was so thankful, I had not even seen it. He then brought us out a free appetizer because of that. We couldn't believe it, that was by no means their fault...yet they wanted our experience there to be extra special.

You really cannot go wrong with what you order at Casa Banana. They specialize in steak, and they have definitely excelled at this. Up until eating at Casa Banana, if you had asked Mr. Buck and I what the best steak we have ever had was, we instantly would tell you it was at Chops Steakhouse in Napa Valley. Now it is a toss up between the two. Best.steak.ever.

As you can see, Tulum offers quite the unique dining options. Not much Mexican food, but a whole lot of other incredible international options.
