Honeymoon in Tulum: Part Uno

Many people have asked us where it is we decided to take our honeymoon. When we respond with "Tulum, Mexico" usually we are greeted with a blank face. Not many people have heard of it, which is quite surprising to me considering some of the incredible Mayan ruins that are located there.

Why did we choose Tulum? There are a few reasons that led us to that destination. Being that we are from California, we have had many opportunities to visit Mexico. We had always heard of Tulum but had not been there, we figured now was the perfect time. Also, some people are not aware that not all of Mexico is white sand and turquoise water. In fact most of the places I have been to in Mexico are the same coast line as California, which is a totally different type of beach feel. Tulum is on the Caribbean, therefore you have that incredible contrast of the clear turquoise water and white (with almost a tinge of pink from the coral) sandy beach.

Also hello, but why not visit the site of Mayan ruins in 2012? I swear we didn't do that on purpose. Trust me, people had a lot of fun with the whole "Mayan calendar the world is ending" thing.

We knew that we wanted a honeymoon where we could just relax and literally do nothing should we choose to. I did extensive research on where to stay, and there are quite a few choices. Once you fly into Cancun, you have an hour and a half drive to Tulum. Once you hit the "strip" of Tulum (which is Boco Paila Road) there is just a straight road of hotels and restaurants right on the beach. We wanted to avoid large crowds so we ended up staying at a hotel that was at the very end of strip, away from many of the hotels.

We chose Be Tulum because of the extravagant simplicity. Conundrum? Why yes it is.

They do not have any TVs or really anything fancy in any of the rooms. Yet the rooms are extravagantly beautiful with the ocean right outside your doorstep.

There are only twenty rooms in the entire hotel so you are never fighting for a spot on the beach. Might I add there are also beds on the beach.

BEDS.ON.THE.BEACH.

Greatest idea of all time. How do you not feel asleep on one of these?

The hotel staff takes great pride in making sure the beach is always cleaned and freshly combed. The hotel is also set back into the jungle, so at night it can get fairly dark. No worries though, every path is lit up by lanterns and tiki torches.

I felt like I was on an episode of Lost.

Be Tulum is incredible in that it really is all about just "being." If you want peace and quiet, you will find it here.

Plus, looks whose name I found in the guestbook.

 Ginger Spice? I'm SOLD.

Up next in Honeymoon in Tulum: Part Dos, I will tell you about all of the interesting food we found there.
